Great Danes – a closer look

What actually is a Great Dane? What is behind this name, and what absolutely needs to be said about it? On these pages you will find a portrayal of this breed from a completely personal perspective. Nothing from “what people say”, not from a breeder’s point of view. The Danes I know were no longer wanted by others. From the first to the last Dane in my life, none of them came to me as a puppy from a breeder. And actually, “the last one” probably has not arrived yet; the virus that spreads once you get to know these dogs does not fade, cannot be cured, and tends to be permanent.

First of all, Great Danes are a form of torture breeding. Let us not deny it; that is simply how it is. Even in 2026, Danes are not bred for their character, they are bred purely for their looks. They are supposed to have coat colors that someone once came up with, they are supposed to reach a certain minimum size, they are supposed to be square.

Health? Who even asks about that? People also rarely ask whether they should have children with one another when they are in love… or whether they are indisputably healthy over generations. All right, an outrageous statement. Let us talk about it!

  1. Torture Breeding of Great Danes

People rarely question whether dogs should get pregnant with each other when they're in love... or whether they're healthy without any doubt, for generations. OK, that's an unashamed statement. Let's talk about it!

  2. Great Dane puppies

Thinking about a Great Dane puppy? This page explains the hidden costs, daily realities and responsibilities – and offers gentle alternatives like adopting an adult Dane.

  3. Great Dane School

The ideal dog school for Great Danes has a specialization in, or demonstrable experience with, large/XL breeds and the safety aspects that come with them. It clearly rejects any kind of coercive tools, choke chains, leash jerks and “dominance” methods. Its focus is on positive reinforcement and a calm, structured atmosphere instead of “action courses”. It also takes time for individual topics and allows clearly defined one‑to‑one issues.
